Delivering a frontline cancer care facility enabled by technology
Sydney Adventist Hospital, also known as ‘the San’, is the largest private and the largest not-for-profit hospital in New South Wales. A teaching hospital of The University of Sydney, the San has a reputation for clinical excellence underpinned by a holistic approach to patient care.
Following our successful project delivery of a new multi-disciplinary Clinical School for the hospital in 2012, our team was asked to take a leading consultancy role for a scheme to create a frontline facility for cancer care.
The San wanted to create a state-of-the-art Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) conference room for its Integrated Cancer Centre where clinicians could meet, collaborate, pool expertise and share ideas. The goal would be to enable experts to devise the best possible treatment plans for San’s cancer patients.
The AUS$1m space would need to be technology rich, allowing real-time communication between cancer and other medical specialists across multiple locations, using digital information from a range of sources.
With patients’ lives at stake, the conference room’s IT systems would have to be fail-safe and easy to use, acting as a tool to assist those making clinical decisions within a high-pressurised, crisis-driven environment.
A client/consultant relationship based on shared goals
We were brought on board at an early stage, prior even to the architect’s appointment, to help shape the brief and design strategy.
Our team became totally amalgamated with San’s ITS team to help the hospital pin down its exact requirements of the new conference room, which, in effect, would act as a mini crisis-management centre.
To better understand the clinician’s requirements, we looked closely at the process the consultants go through to make treatment decisions and worked out how we could leverage technology to empower them.
At all times, we kept project stakeholders in the loop with regards to the scope and progress of works to ensure a transparent project delivery process.
As a trusted advisor, the San allowed us to drive the programme for the detailed design phase which further enabled us to streamline project delivery.
Securing the best outcome for patients
Since opening in March 2017, the MDT conference room has seen more than a 66% increase in the number of patient cases presented (around 250 in its first year).
Referred to as the ‘cancer war room’ by staff, the highly advanced IT systems are successfully enabling clinicians to collaborate, cross-pollinate ideas, and share information such as radiology images, video and pathology results.
In a letter endorsing our submission of the project for the 2018 Consult Australia Client Service Excellence Award, San said it was ‘delighted’ with the outcome of the project. San described our team as an ‘extension’ of its own ITS team and said the project objectives were met of delivering an efficient, state-of-the-art facility that would serve to secure the very best possible outcomes for patients.
WSP has been recognised with Consult Australia’s 2018 Client Service Excellence Gold Award and the BICSI South Pacific 2018 ICT Active Equipment Design Excellence Award for our integral role in bringing clinical best practice to the Sydney Adventist Hospital, known as the SAN, with the delivery of a $1m state-of-the-art MultiDisciplinary Team (MDT) conference room in the Integrated Cancer Care Centre.
